Hospice Hawaii has a new name: Navian Hawaii. Formed from the words “Navigator” and “Guardian,” the name change better reflects its expanded scope of services, which now includes integrated care, while highlighting its continued commitment to care for patients and their families.

“As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we’re excited to launch Navian Hawaii and offer our expanded services to the local community,” said Tori Abe Carapelho, president and chief executive officer. “Like navigators of a voyaging canoe, our staff helps people navigate out of the storm of uncertainty and to calmer, brighter seas. As guardians, our staff protects the personal wishes and values of everyone under our care.”

Navian Hawaii will continue to offer hospice care as a major pillar of service, providing comprehensive and compassionate care to terminally ill patients and their families. The non-profit organization has also expanded its services to include integrated care, designed to alleviate the pain and challenges patients face, both physical and emotional, when living with a serious but treatable medical condition.

Navian Hawaii’s integrated care team is comprised of a social worker and an advanced practice registered nurse in order to provide disease process education, emotional support, advanced care planning, and a variety of additional services to support patients who don’t know where to turn for help. Unlike in hospice care, patients in the Integrated Care Program can continue to seek curative treatments.

All of the programs and services associated with the former Hospice Hawaii will continue, including hospice care, complementary services, and community support groups on Oahu and Molokai for those struggling with the loss of a loved one. Navian Hawaii will also continue to grow its dedicated and comprehensive pediatric hospice program, Manaolana Keiki (“Hope for the Children”), which provides specialized care for children with life-limiting illness and their families.
