There’s No Place Like Home

For Helene Uyemura, home has always been more than just a place—it’s where love, memories, and family surround her. A lifelong resident of Waiahole Valley, she never imagined that a stroke in June 2017 would take away not only her mobility but also her sense of independence.

The road to recovery was long. After spending a month in rehabilitation relearning how to walk and use her left hand, she returned home, but life was not the same. Every follow-up appointment required meticulous planning, hours of travel, and the help of her daughters, who were juggling careers and families of their own. Even TheHandi-Van, meant to be a lifeline, required a long walk to the street and an accompanying caregiver.

Helene deeply missed the days when she could simply come and go as she pleased. More than anything, she felt like a burden—though her daughters would never say so.

Then, in early 2024, life changed again. Helene’s beloved husband of 60 years, Laurence “Kealoha” Uyemura, wished for one thing in his final days—to be at home, surrounded by the love of his family. With the support of Navian Hawaii’s hospice program, Kealoha’s wish came true. He received care in the comfort of their Kāne‘ohe home and passed away peacefully in March, held close by those who loved him most.

It was during this difficult time that Helene learned about Navian’s palliative care program from one of the nurses caring for Kealoha. When she enrolled after his passing, it felt like a lifeline. Now, instead of exhausting trips to the doctor, Navian’s care team comes to her. They monitor her health, provide support, and—most importantly—allow her to stay where she feels safest and most at peace.

To anyone who has suffered a stroke, Helene says, “Don’t give up.” Even on the most challenging days, remember there are people who want to help you—whether it be emotionally, physically or spiritually.

With Navian Hawaii, Helene no longer has to worry about coordinating appointments around her daughters’ schedules. Instead, she can simply enjoy their visits without guilt, knowing that she has the care she needs, right at home. And while nothing can fill the space Kealoha left behind, the compassionate team at Navian is walking alongside her, helping her navigate both her health and her grief.

Because at Navian Hawaii, we believe care should meet you where you are—where love lives, where memories are made. Where there’s no place like home.
