The Missing Link

When Deborah Wagner joined Navian Hawaii in July 2024, she didn’t just take on a volunteer role; she found her calling. Though the onboarding process took a few months, she soon realized she was part of something truly special.

Deborah had volunteered with other organizations in the past, but none felt quite right—until Navian. “I value this organization,” she shared. “Their mission spoke to me, especially because it’s about being there for people through difficult times.”

Since joining, Deborah has become an invaluable member of Navian’s volunteer ohana. She began by offering respite care and soon established a meaningful routine of weekly visits. Through these visits, she formed a strong bond with a patient, sparked by shared stories and games of chess and checkers. “At first, we didn’t have much in common,” she recalled. “So, I brought games. From there, conversation came naturally.”

Her commitment extends beyond patient visits. Deborah also joins the team for bi-weekly personal care supply runs, helping ensure families receive essential supplies. Additionally, she makes regular “tuck-in” calls to check on patients, discuss medications, and coordinate care with Navian’s clinical team.

For Deborah, volunteering isn’t just completing tasks. It is about being the “missing link” that enhances the care and support Navian staff already provide. She values the opportunity to learn from the team and finds joy in building connections with new people.

Now, half a year into her journey with Navian, Deborah’s dedication remains unwavering. Her message to those considering volunteering is simple: “I don’t think there’s a greater feeling than making someone feel appreciated. Being there for them during any phase of their lives is truly rewarding.”
